humidity

Gannavaram airport recorded a maximum temperature of 34.4 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 16.7 degrees Celsius on Thursday. Humidity which was 79 per cent in the morning dropped to 42 per cent in the evening.

The following are the prices (in rupees per kg) of the essential commodities in the local wholesale markets on Thursday, according to the Vijayawada Chamber of Commerce and Industry: groundnut oil - 49, palmolein oil - 37.50, sunflower oil - 48.50, tamarind (flower variety) - 25 to 26, tamarind (karipuli variety) - 35 to 40, chillis (AC) - 18 to 20, chillis (non-AC) - 20 to 26, rice (2716) - 12, rice (superfine) - 13, rice (samba masoori) - 14 to 15, rice (sona masoori) - 16 to 17, black gram - 18 to 24, red gram - 21 to 25.

Science talent

tests

The Vishwabharathy Foundation will conduct the State and national level science talent tests for students on February 13. The State-level test will be conducted from 10 am to 12 noon at Bhashyam school on Pinnamaneni Poly Clinic road, St. John's and Akshara national public school, Bandar Road. Students who have applied for the test can obtain their hall-tickets at 59A-13-10, Padamata Lanka. The national-level test will be held at the Buds and Blossoms public school, Moghalrajpuram the same day between 2 pm and 4 pm. DAV School's

distinction

C.S. Swati Bhat, A. Devi Charan and R. Krishna Kanth, students of D.A.V. Public School, VTPS, secured the first place in the mandal-level "Chekumuki science talent test - 2005" conducted by the Jana Vignana Vedika. The team will represent the Ibrahimpatnam mandal in the district-level competition to be held on February 13. Meanwhile, another student of the D.A.V. Public School, M. Sai Anurag, secured the second rank in the State-level mathematics talent test conducted by the "Association for improvement of mathematics education."

Tsunami relief

The teaching and non-teaching staff and permanent members of the Siddhartha Academy, Siddhartha Foundation, Siddhartha Kala Peetam and Siddhartha institutions donated Rs. 10 lakhs to the tsunami relief fund of the State Government. A delegation of the Siddhartha academy led by its secretary, M. Subba Rao, handed over the cheque of Rs. 10 lakhs to the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, at Hyderabad on Wednesday.
