Srinagar highway closed again
By Shujaat Bukhari
SRINAGAR,
FEB. 15.
The Srinagar-Jammu national highway was closed again today following massive rains, which triggered avalanches and landslips between Banihal and Ramsu.
Most of the Jammu-bound traffic was reported to be stranded as they could not move ahead, officials said here.
"Massive snowfall on Srinagar side of the tunnel and rains on the other side have triggered landslips and shooting stones. Most of the vehicles that had not crossed the tunnel were diverted to Srinagar and for those who had crossed it, efforts are being made to help them reach their destination after the weather stabilises," the Defence Spokesman, Lt. Col. V.K. Batra, told The Hindu . He, however, denied reports of any avalanches hitting the tunnel.
In order to prevent the human losses and to avoid passengers getting stranded on the highway, all the agencies, involved in up-keep and use of the road, have set up a Task Force.
