RANCHI, FEB.15. Barring stray incidents of violence, polling in the 29 constituencies of Jharkhand was peaceful today. A Central Reserve Police Force camp was attacked by suspected militants in Lohardaga district early on Tuesday. The ensuing exchange of fire continued for about three hours, official sources said. A CRPF personnel, Pawan Singh, was injured. At Kolebera in Simdega district, the crew of a television channel was attacked and the wind-screen of their vehicle damaged. In another incident, the United Goans Democratic Party (UGDP) candidate from Mander, Bandhu Tirkey, was attacked by members of a rival group. He was admitted to hospital where his condition is said to be serious. In Angarah area of Ranchi district, some voters clashed with the police and the patrolling party had to remain in the area for hours. When the situation turned violent, additional forces were sent to the area to restore the peace. The State Chief Electoral Officer, A.K. Pandey, said polling had to be cancelled in two booths of Ranchi and Khijri constituencies owing to errors in electronic voting machines. Mr. Pandey said the Rashtriya Janata Dal candidate from Ranchi, Krishna Yadav, was taken into custody for threatening the voters.
