Nurses take lessons in self-defence

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, FEB. 18. It was a rather special day at the Capital's Moolchand Hospital, where 75 nursing students woke up to an `empowered' Friday morning. Taking a break from their lesson of serving the ill and infirm, these students changed uniform to take classes in self-defence.

And present at the concluding function of the two-week programme for nursing students of JRT School of Nursing at Moolchand Hospital was Joint Commissioner (Women's Cell), Vimla Mehra, who distributed certificates to students who had completed their course.

Speaking at the function Ms. Mehra said the programme is part of the self-defence scheme started by the Delhi Police in 2002 to increase the common man's trust in police. This exercise is part of the confidence building programme introduced by the police to make the city more women-friendly and fearless. And now the next training camp will be held at Apollo Hospital that has approached us for holding such classes.

Self-defence training is compulsory for every nurse as per instructions of Delhi Nursing Council and according to authorities at the Moolchand Hospital; they had initiated the programme for nurses. Now it proposes to hold a fifteen-day training programme for every new batch of students.
