HYDERABAD, FEB. 27. A group of representatives of NGOs, including Ali Asghar of the Confederation of Voluntary Agencies (COVA), today demanded that criminal proceedings be initiated against those responsible for the post-Godhra carnage. The demand coincides with the third anniversary of the incident on February 27. In a statement issued here, 16 representatives wanted immediate release of those detained under POTA in the Godhra incident following the Banerjee report "as they were unfairly forced to pay the price just for belonging to a particular community." They sought rehabilitation of the victims and payment of adequate compensation to them. The statement contended that three years after the incident at Godhra on February 27, the "mist surrounding the incident has been cleared with the Banerjee Commission categorically disproving the claims of communal parties." The signatories to the statement included Sagari Ramdas (Antara), Madhu (Yakshi), Mantosh Mandal (Coalition for Peace and Harmony), Kulsum Reddy (Apna Watan), Maj. S.G.M. Quadri (Help Hyderabad), K. Lalitha (Thinksoft), Prasad (Sakshi), Vinay Kumar (NCDHR), Leslie (APDVVVU), Yadaiah (STEPS), Babu (Youth Democratic Forum), Shakeel Ahmed (Human Rights Law Network), Vasudha (Disha), Anuradha (Aman Vedika) and Krishna (JVV).
