Selected for Scientist Award

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh State Council of Science and Technology (APCOST) has selected three scientists for awarding `Andhra Pradesh Scientist Award (APSA) -2005' in connection with the National Science Day celebrations on February 28.

The APSA awards are presented to eminent scientists from different disciplines who made substantial contribution to their field.

The function will be held at the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT) Auditorium on Monday, according to the member-secretary of APCOST, K. Vijaya Kumari.

The APCOST is also organising science exhibition, quiz competitions and elocution to mark the occasion and inculcate scientific temper among students and the public.

Director of research institute

HYDERABAD: R. Tirumala Rao, Director of Publication division at Potti Sriramulu Telugu University, has been appointed the Director of Andhra Pradesh Government Oriental Manuscripts Library and Research Institute, on deputation for a period of one year with effect from March 1.

One of the coordinators of `Village India' project in Andhra Pradesh undertaken by UNESCO and Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts, New Delhi, Prof. Rao has authored six books on folk and tribal literature, according to a press release.

Fire at ginning mill

ADILABAD: Cotton was destroyed in fire at a ginning mill in Bhainsa town on Sunday.

According to the police, fire broke out in the mill at 11 a.m. Fire tenders from Nirmal and Ichoda were pressed into service.

Man hacked to death

Kakinada: A man, identified as Vasamsetti Venkatrao (60), was hacked to death by his three sons born to his first wife following a dispute over land at Nallachruvu village of Ayinavilli mandal on Saturday night. The police arrested the accused.

Appointed standing counsel

HYDERABAD: D. Linga Rao has been appointed standing counsel for the Andhra Pradesh State Civil Supplies Corporation Limited for a period of three years. He will serve as counsel in the High Court and other State-level courts, according to an official order.

Mr. Rao, who enrolled himself as an advocate on March 8, 1979, worked in the city civil courts, High Court and also in the Andhra Pradesh Administrative Tribunal.

Mala Mahanadu rally next month

HYDERABAD: Mala Mahanadu will organise a rally and a public meeting here on March 21 calling for unity among Dalits. It will also press for other demands of the organisation such as non-categorisation of SCs.

P.V. Rao, president of Mala Mahandu, said in a press release on Sunday that Dalit leaders, including some Central Ministers and the MPs belonging to SC and ST, would be invited to attend the meeting. A special issue on Dalit agitations, welfare measures for SCs/STs and budget allocations would be released at the meeting.

Trade unions plan `protest week'

HYDERABAD: The State units of CITU, AITUC and HMS on Sunday decided to observe a `protest week' from March 6 to express resentment against the `anti-people' policies pursued by the UPA Government.

The programmes to be taken up during the week are distribution of pamphlets (March 6), wearing badges (March 7), holding gate meetings (March 8), burning of effigies (March 9), mass submission of memoranda to officials (March 10), holding of dharnas/rallies at district centres (March 11) and conducting of symposia at towns/industrial centres (March 12).

This was stated in a press release by Y. Siddayya, CITU secretary, and T. Narasimhan, AITUC secretary.

Teachers threaten stir

HYDERABAD: The Social Welfare Residential Teachers' Union and Social Welfare Residential Junior Lecturers' Association have decided to go on relay fast from March 1, if the Government failed to redress their grievances.

The teachers' union president, A. Madhusudan, and lecturers' association president, K. Ravinder Reddy, said they would intensify their stir by launching indefinite fast from March 4 if there was no response from the Government.

Case against official

HYDERABAD: A case under the Prevention of Atrocities Against Scheduled Castes and Tribes Act was booked following a complaint by four inmates of Osmania University campus that the Personal Assistant, Bhaskar, to the Andhra Pradesh Government Secretary (political), General Administration Directorate (GAD), had abused them in the name of caste.

According to a complaint filed by K.C. Laxman of Tilaknagar and the inmates of OU campus, the PA had abused them in the name of their caste when they went to the State Secretariat on February 23 seeking information about the rule of reservation pertaining to some SC and ST posts.

Three-year-old girl drowned

KURNOOL: A three-year-old girl was drowned in an effluent pit at a slab stone factory at Bethamcharla in Kurnool district on Sunday.

According to reports, the girl, Nagalakshmi, was taken to the factory by her father who was employed there. While playing on the premises, she fell in the pit.

Student ends life

Srikakulam: Mantheni Sarada, a second year Intermediate student of Sri Chaitanya College, allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself in her house in Parankusam street in the town on Sunday.

According to the Sub-Inspector of Police, Appala Raju, the girl took this extreme step when her father, a carpenter, chided her over studies.

In Anantapur town, a second year student of mechanical engineering diploma in the Government Polytechnic, Praveen Kumar (19), attempted suicide by consuming pesticide allegedly due to harassment by teachers. He was admitted to hospital where his condition was stated to be serious.

Two die in mishap

NELLORE: Two persons died when the country craft in which they were moving in a tank overturned near Lakeview Colony of Podalakur Road here on Sunday.

According to the police, the dead were identified as Sk. Javed (15) and Rajesh (16).

Genco engineer suffers burns

NIZAMABAD: An Assistant Engineer in the Andhra Pradesh Generation Corporation, Santhose, sustained burn injuries due to short-circuit at the Nizamsagar Hydel Project near Nizamsagar mandal headquarters town on Sunday.

He was taken to the Nizams Institute of Medical Sciences in Hyderabad.

A home guard, Sailoo, who received minor injuries in the mishap, was admitted to Government hospital at Yellareddy.

Health camp by police

Sangareddy: As part of efforts by police to gain villagers' confidence in naxal affected areas, the Medak police today organized a massive health and medical camp at Papannapet covering almost 15 villages. Additional SP, Alexander, inaugurated the camp and Siddipet DSP, Y. Raju, took part. Around 3000 people attended the camp and a team of specialists including paediatricians and gynaecologists examined them. Medicines and spectacles worth Rs 2.5 lakhs were distributed.

Andhra Bank officers' meet

KARIMNAGAR: The second zonal conference of All-India Andhra Bank Officers' Federation was held here on Sunday. The federation president, K Vijaya Kumar, the chairman of the reception committee, Vidyasagar Rao, and the general secretary of the federation, K Subbaiah, participated.

The zonal manager of Karimnagar, GDV Prasada Rao called upon the officers to strive for better business growth.

Training for youngsters

Warangal: The Andhra Pradesh Industrial & Technical Consultancy Organisation (APITCO) invited applications from youth belonging to minority category for vocation training courses in tailoring and computer applications. Those in the age group of 18 to 35 years may submit their bio-data at the office of Minorities Corporation, Collectorate complex before March 4. Warangal: Y N Reddy was elected president of National Institute of Technology (NIT) Teachers' Association. L. Krishnanand was elected secretary. Mr. Reddy said he would press for long pending demands such as recruitment, implementation of Career Advancement Scheme and better infrastructure for teaching staff.

Lok Adalat conducted

MADANAPALLE: Lok Adalat was conducted here on Saturday under the auspices of the Mandal Legal Services Society and chairman second additional district judge, P. Ramesh Babu.

In all 10 civil, 4 motor vehicle accident and 40 excise cases were disposed off. As compensation Rs. 6,41,000 was paid to the victims.

Two houses damaged in fire

NELLORE: Two thatched houses were gutted in a mishap which occurred in Chiramana village of Atmakur mandal on Saturday night. The incident reportedly occurred when the inmates were away, resulting in all belongings, including household articles perishing in the fire. Fire tenders from Atmakur were rushed to the spot and the fire put out.

`Sannihitham' inaugurated

CHITTOOR: `Sannihitham' a computerised centre aimed at delivering service to the people as well as employees of the Police Department was inaugurated by Jayarama Reddy, the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Ananthapur range at the premises of district police office here on Sunday.
