Projects to be implemented as per new norms

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, FEB.27. New drawing and design guidelines framed by the Central Designs Organisation (CDO) would be implemented in the execution of irrigation projects being taken up in the State at a cost of Rs. 46,000 crores, the Major Irrigation Minister, Ponnala Laxmaiah, said here on Sunday.

Mr. Laxmaiah reviewed with CDO officials the newly-framed procedures which would help in maintaining uniform standards and prevent delays in the execution of the projects.

The guidelines mention in detail the procedures to be followed in construction of dams. They pertain to works relating to spillway, non-overflow dams, earth dams, canal alignments, hydro-mechanical designs and lift irrigation schemes.

Pumpsets

The Minister also directed the officials to implement the engineering code numbers as mentioned in the guidelines.

Meanwhile, the Government has decided to exert pressure on the Kirloskar-Ebra Corporations to supply pumpsets for the Devadula lift irrigation scheme before the deadline. This decision was taken after an official team, which visited Tokyo and inspected the prototypes, briefed Mr. Laxmaiah after its return. The officials said the pumpsets while utilising eight MW would supply 5 cumecs of water with 90 per cent efficiency.

The Minister directed the officials to step up the pressure for early supply while ensuring that there was no compromise in the quality and standard. He also told them to monitor whether the casting, assembling, painting, shipping and other works were being conducted as stipulated in the agreement and completed by December.

Mr. Laxmaiah asked the officials to ensure during the discussions with their Japanese counterparts that the pumpsets were supplied by Japan before the due date.
