Jankovic, Davenport in final

DUBAI, MARCH 5. Australian Open champion Serena Williams retired with a shoulder injury on Friday, leaving Jelena Jankovic of Serbia and Montenegro to meet World No. 1 Lindsay Davenport in the Dubai Women's Open final.

Williams was trailing 6-0, 4-3 after 59 minutes in the semifinal when she quit after with a tendon strain in her right shoulder. ``It was hurting really bad,'' she said. ``One more point and I think I was going to die.''

Second-seeded Williams blamed the tournament balls for her injury. ``I think it is because of the ball.

Ever since I have been practicing here, my ribs and my arms (have been) hurting in a really bad way.''

Davenport weathered an upset stomach and overcame eighth-seeded Patty Schnyder of Switzerland 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 to reach her third straight final, following the Australian Open (lost to Williams), and Tokyo Indoors (lost to Maria Sharapova).

Jankovic had defeated India's Sania Mirza 6-2, 6-2 to reach the semifinals. — AP
