BDA to call tenders for Hi-tech City

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, MARCH 5. Tenders for construction work on Hi-tech City will be invited on Monday, officials of the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) said here today. An e-tendering process will be initiated to increase competition and bring in more transparency into the system.

Hi-tech City is to be built on 997 acres. Some of its features include the construction of a six-lane expressway that will connect the international airport at Devanahalli with Electronics City on Hosur Road. "Information technology professionals and clients need not enter the city and get stuck in the chaotic traffic to reach Hi-tech City. The travel time for them will be shortened to 20 minutes," officials said.

Two steel bridges that can be constructed within a week are also planned instead of the regular concrete bridges that take up to six months.

A self-contained convention centre on over 150 acres contiguous to Hi-tech City is also being planned. The convention centre complex is expected to include a bus depot, railway station, international school, hotel, restaurants, exhibition complex and a fully networked conference hall. "Every need of an individual will be met at the convention centre. There is no need for a person to come out and look for facilities," said the BDA Commissioner, M.N. Vidyashankar.

The Rs. 390-crore project has been cleared, in principle, by the Cabinet and the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, has said that he will look into the provision of Central funds for the project.
