Kolkata retains table tennis title

VISAKHAPATNAM, MARCH 5. Kolkata retained the team title beating Mumbai in a repeat of last year's final in the 28th all-India Major Ports table tennis tournament at the Port Indoor Stadium here on Saturday.

In the 26th hockey tournament too Kolkata, runner-up last year, was in lead by nine points at the end of second day of the round-robin league, pushing the holder Mumbai to joint second place with host Visakhapatnam (six points each).

Visakhapatnam rallied from a 0-1 deficit to beat last year's third placed team, Chennai 3-1 to be in contention for the second place.

The results: Table tennis final: Kolkata bt Mumbai 3-0 (A. Mukerjee bt Sanjay Pathankar 11-3, 11-6, 11-7; S. De Sarkar bt Pankaj Kadu 14-12, 11-9, 11-6; A.L. Chowdary bt Sunil Kelkar 3-11, 11-8, 8-11, 11-4, 11-5). Third place: Kandal bt Visakhapatnam 3-0 (Mahesh Hindrani bt G.V.S. Rama Rao 12-10, 11-7, 11-5; Prasanth Buch bt D. Suren 17-15, 15-13, 5-11, 9-11, 11-4; Manish Hindrani bt V.V. Rao 11-7, 11-6, 6-11, 11-9). Semifinals: Kolkota bt Kandal 3-0, Mumbai bt Visakhapatnam 3-0.

Hockey round-robin: Visakhapatnam 3 (LPJ Das 2, Nelson Peter 1) bt Chennai 1 (O.M. Ganesh 1). Kolkata 6 (Rajarabi Das 2, Nelson Herems 2, Yasub Bengra 1, Surjit Patra 1) bt Tuticorin 0.
