Not many takers for traffic warden posts

By Our Staff Correspondent

MYSORE, MARCH 5. Even as the city's population has increased to over eight lakhs, there are only a few takers for the post of traffic wardens, an honorary post, according to the Police Commissioner, Praveen Sood.

Participating in a public interaction programme at Kuvempunagar here on Friday, Mr. Sood said that hardly 15 people have come forward to take up the post of traffic wardens, who are utilised to regulate traffic.

In the light of staff shortage, he said the department was forced to avail itself of the services of civilians to regulate traffic. The interaction was organised by Aniketana Yuvaka Sangha and Suryodaya Yuvaka Sangha.

Mr. Sood said the increasing responsibilities of maintaining law and order has affected the detection and prevention of crime. He said from processions to street plays, every event required police protection.

Mr. Sood said special squads have been set up to crack down on drunken driving in the city. More cases of drunken driving are being registered, especially against the youth.

Stating that surveys have been conducted to install traffic signals at 11 points in the city, he said the department will also look into those road humps that have been laid unscientifically.
