BANGALORE, MARCH 5. The State Government will consider reducing the sales tax on handicrafts to the minimum after the introduction of Value Added Tax from April 1, the Industries Minister, P.G.R. Sindhia, has said. "We do not know what percentage of tax will be levied on handicrafts after VAT. But the State Government will try and impose the lowest percentage (of tax)," he said here on Saturday. Earlier, members of the Karnataka Handlooms Development Corporation and the Crafts Council of Karnataka had urged the Minister to keep sales tax on handicrafts to the minimum. Inaugurating a 10-day State handicrafts exhibition, `Cauvery Kalavaibhava,' organised by the Department of Commerce and Industries and the Karnataka State Crafts Development Corporation, he said artisans have to develop contemporary designs and keep in mind the international market for their products. "Our market should not be limited to neighbouring States such as Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. We should be able to export our products to China as well," he said. Mr. Sindhia commended the use of natural material and dyes in the manufacture of toys and handicrafts. Even coconut fibre that is normally thrown away has been used to make beautiful dolls and handicrafts by artisans.
Demonstrations
Over 130 artisans are taking part in this exhibition intended to promote their products without interference from any middleman or agent. There are also live demonstrations of the techniques in lacquer ware, inlay work and pottery. On exhibit at the stalls are handmade paper lanterns, leather lampshades, colourful vegetable and fruit replicas, sandalwood artefacts, terracota earrings and wall hangings, jewellery, carpets, textiles etc. Also participating in the event are the Karnataka State Coir Development Corporation, Karnataka State Coir Cooperative Federation, Karnataka Handloom Development Corporation, Karnataka Silk Industries Corporation, Leather Industries Corporation, and the Khadi and Village Industries Board.
