Heavy rain in Bellary
BELLARY
March 10.
Heavy showers in Bellary on Wednesday night brought respite from the summer heat. There were reports of rain in other parts of the district a day earlier. Bellary recorded 24 mm of rain in 24 hours. Hagari Bommanahalli recorded 8 mm and 3.4 mm of rainfall over two days. Hospet received 3.4 mm of rainfall, Sirguppa 9 mm, and Sandur one mm on Wednesday. There were reports of loss of plantain crop in some villages in Hospet taluk owing to heavy rain accompanied by strong winds. The mercury had been shooting up with each passing day, and the average day temperature was between 38 and 40 degrees Celsius. Bellary is known for its hot weather, and the humourist late BeChi once said the district has only two seasons summer and severe summer. In peak summer April and May the mercury is above 42 degrees Celsius, and State government offices function between 8.30 a.m. and 1.30 p.m.
Khadi units may get funds
GADAG
March 10.
H.K. Patil, Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs, has said he will take up with the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, the need to ensure timely payment of funds to khadi institutions to enable them to sell products on rebate. Inaugurating the khadi festival here, Mr. Patil said he has received representations from khadi institutions for release of funds. He called upon the institutions to keep in mind sartorial tastes while producing readymade garments in khadi. D.R. Patil, Congress MLA, who presided over the function, said the khadi and village industries sector is facing difficulties and requires immediate assistance.
Meet on folklore in Haveri
HAVERI
March 10.
The 31st Akhila Karnataka Jaanapada Sammelana will be organised at Ranebennur in Haveri district on Saturday and Sunday under the auspices of the Department of Folklore of Karnatak University. D.K. Rajendra, folk scholar from Mysore University, will preside. A.K. Singh, Registrar (General), Karnatak University, will inaugurate the sammelan. "Shree Padre,'' environmentalist and writer, will deliver the keynote address. The sammelan is expected to discuss traditional agricultural practices, literature connected with it, issues such as Green Revolution, and the impact of the globalisation and liberalisation on agriculture. Cultural programmes will also be organised.
`Resign for project's sake'
CHITRADURGA
MARCH 10.
The Chitradurga district units of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) and Hasiru Sene have urged the people's representatives to pressure the Government to implement the Upper Bhadra Project, which will help provide irrigation to central Karnataka, by resigning from their posts. ``The people of the district are being cheated. The people's representatives are only using the (Upper Bhadra) issue to get political mileage,'' Bagenal Kotrabasappa, president of the districts units of KRRS and Hasiru Sene, said in a press release. ``The MLAs and MPs of the district should boycott the functions of Ministers and other dignitaries in the district. This will serve as a warning to the Government,'' he felt.
Contests for children on TV
MANGALORE
March 10.
Mandd Sobhann, a Konkani cultural ensemble, will conduct contests for children on Konkani TV in April. Briefing presspersons here on Thursday, the head of the organisation, Eric Ozario, said though the contests will be held in Konkani, children from all religious and linguistic groups can participate. The programme, "Razaa Mazaa," which will include story telling, singing and dancing, will be organised for children under four categories. Children interested in participating can register their names on phone before April 7 (2232239) on weekdays from 9.30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. Those selected for the finals in every category will have to attend a practice session on April 15.
