SSLC exam from March 17

Bangalore March 10. The Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board (KSEEB) has said that the SSLC examinations will start on March 17 and end on March 24. There will be no examination on March 20 (Sunday). This year 8,21,757 candidates will appear for the examinations, of whom 1,73,059 are repeaters. The required stationery has been provided to all the examination centres and admission tickets of all the schools have been despatched. Sensitive and most sensitive examination centres have been identified and special squads will monitor the conduct of the examinations. Special concessions given to visually impaired and other physically challenged students for the previous examinations will be continued. The visually impaired and physically challenged can avail themselves of the services of a scribe with prior permission of the Chief Superintendent of the examination centres. There is no restriction on the educational qualification of scribes. A circular in this regard has already been sent to all schools, T.M. Kumar, Director (Examinations), said in a press release.

Electronic duty payment

BANGALORE MARCH 10. As part of its e-governance initiatives, the Department of Customs has launched a pilot project for electronic payment of customs duty at the air cargo complex here. The facility is expected to save time reduce the transaction cost of assessees, an official press release said.

Council session from today

BANGALORE MARCH 10. The Legislative Council will resume on Friday its 102 session, which was adjourned on February 5. The Deputy Chairman of the Council, V.R. Sudarshan, has been the acting Chairman for over a year now. The expectation that the Chairman would be elected during the last sitting was belied. The House is also without a Secretary. Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, K. Jayashankara Murthy, officiating Secretary, said the House will meet for 14 days from March 11 to 31. Asked about the election of the Chairman, he said the Government is aware of the issue and it will take a decision soon. The break-up of the various parties in the 75-member House, which has three vacancies (nominated members), is: Congress 46, Bharatiya Janata Party 10, Janata Dal (Secular) 11, Janata Dal (United) 3 and Independents 2.

Effigy burnt

Dharwad March 10. Students of Law College here today burnt an effigy of the Karnataka High Court Chief Justice demanding the setting up of a Circuit Bench of the High Court in Hubli-Dharwad. The fast-unto-death agitation by two lawyers, including the Dharwad Bar Association President, B.D. Hiremath, demanding the establishment of the Bench, entered the third day today. The President of the Bharatiya Janata Party State unit, Jagadish Shettar, who called on the agitators, assured them of his party's support for the agitation.

SFI organises protest

Bangalore March 10. The Students' Federation of India (SFI) organised a protest here on Thursday against the increase in admission and examination fees for job-oriented courses. Students from Kolar, Mandya, Tumkur, Hassan, Bellary and Bangalore Rural and Urban districts gathered here and marched from Shivananda Circle to the Chief Minister's residence to urge the Government to withdraw the increase in the fees. According to SFI representatives, they were met by the Minister for Primary and Secondary Education, R. Ramalinga Reddy, who called them for a discussion and assured them that the hike in admission and examination fees would be withdrawn. He would hold a meeting with top officials concerned and then take a decision on the issue, they said. The SFI has also demanded that the Government release 18 months' salary of teachers of job-oriented courses, which is pending, and that students taking up the courses be given job guarantee. SFI representatives said that if the Minister fails to fulfil his promise, the SFI will resort to a stronger protest.

Elected to Hindi Prachar Sabha

CHENNAI MARCH 10. The Union Minister of State for Planning, M.V. Rajashekaran, has been elected President of Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha. Other office-bearers are C.C. Reddy, first Vice-President; Vakkom N. Vijayan, second Vice-President; S. Parthasarathy, Treasurer; and K.B. Byali, Chairman (Siksha Parishad).

`Victory for democracy'

BANGALORE MARCH 10. The all-India General Secretary of the BJP and MP for Bangalore South, H.N. Ananth Kumar has termed the interim verdict of the Supreme Court on the Jharkhand issue as a "historic victory for democracy." In a statement to the press, Mr. Ananth Kumar, said that the stand taken by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) before the Assembly elections and after the results were declared has been vindicated. Five independent MLAs support the NDA in Jharkhand, he said and demanded the recall of the Governor of Jharkhand, Syed Sibtey Razi, and the resignation of the Chief Minister, Shibu Soren. The NDA should be allowed to form the Government, he said.

Lightning kills two oxen

BIJAPUR MARCH 10. Two oxen were killed instantly when lightning struck them at Chikkakodagali village in Hungund taluk of Bagalkot district on Wednesday evening. The Hungund police have registered a case under the Natural Calamity Act based on a complaint given by the owner of the animals, Lakshman Dandage, alias Rathod. Reports said thundershowers damaged crops worth lakhs of rupees.

Two drowned in tank

HAVERI March 10. Two boys drowned in Anekere tank on the outskirts of Hangal town in Haveri district on Tuesday, according to information reaching here.

Tousif Ayub Ali Mithaigar (14) and Ayaz Ahmed Ismael Yavagal (16) had gone to the tank to swim. The police have registered a case.

Religious awareness

Bangalore March 10. Sri Jagadguru Rambhapuri Veerasimhasana Mahasamsthana Peetha has organised a three-day religious and social awareness programme from March 22 at Balehonnur in Chikmagalur district.

Sri Veerabhadraswamy Maharathotsva and Sri Jagadguru Renukacharya Jayanthi Yugamanotsva will also be held. The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, is expected to participate, an official press release said.

Free eye surgery camp

Bhadravati March 10. The Prashanti Seva Trust in New Town here has organised a free eye surgery camp at the government general hospital on Saturday under the joint auspices of the District Blindness Eradication Committee, and the Department of Health and Family Welfare, according to a press release. For more details, contact the medical officer at the general hospital or the trust.

Opposition to VAT

BELLARY March 10. The metal merchants, under the banner of Bellary Metal Merchants' Association, have opposed the implementation of Value Added Tax from Arpil 1. They suspended their businesses for the day in support of their demand.

The association members, who took out a procession, submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner to be forwarded to Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister. They urged Mr. Siddaramaiah not to implement VAT in the State for the welfare of the traders.

Closed

DAVANGERE MARCH 10. All the shops at the Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) yard here remained closed on Thursday urging the Government not to include foodgrains under Value Added Tax. The APMC yard wore a deserted look following the strike.

Liquor seized

Raichur March 10. The Raichur police have arrested Shantappa, Gopi, Jambaiah, Yenkanna, Mahadev, Narasappa, and Savareppa and seized some quantity of toddy while they were reportedly trying to sell it in Harijanwada and Maddipet localities in the city on Wednesday. The arrested have been remanded in judicial custody.

The Netajinagar Police have registered a case.

11 arrested

Raichur March 10. The Raichur police arrested Mohammed Ibrahim and Ramalingappa from Maddipet locality in the city, Sakregouda and two others from Umloti from Umloti village, and Umapthi and five others from K. Bassapur village in Sindhanoor taluk and recovered money from them while they were allegedly gambling on Wednesday. They have been remanded in judicial custody.

Cases have been registered at the Netajinagar Police Station and the Turvihal Police Station.

Eye screening camp

MYSORE MARCH 10. The Elder Citizens' Council, in association with the MRC Eye Hospital, will organise a free eye screening camp on March 14.

A press release said that the camp will be held between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the council's premises at Saraswathi Samudaya Bhavan, 73, Hospital Road, Jayalakshmipuram. Those interested may register their names at the council before March 12.

Summer camp

MYSORE MARCH 10. Gyanavikas Academy will conduct a summer coaching camp for second year pre-university students from March 20.

Yoga camp

MYSORE MARCH 10 . Rishi Samskruthi Vidya Kendra will organise a 14-day siddhi samadhi yoga camp from March 14.

Sanskrit school

MYSORE MARCH 10. The Hanyalu Puttamma Channachar Trust has opened a Sanskrit patashala (school) to further Sanskrit learning in the city.

MYSORE MARCH 10 . The monthly meeting of the Railway Pensioners' Association to be held at Dalvoys School on March 13 has been postponed to March 20.

The President of the All India Retired Railwaymen's Association, Y.N. Sastry, and the General Secretary, J. Sundar Rao, will address the gathering.
