NEW DELHI, MARCH 11. Tip-offs provided by the public have helped the Government bust 28 illegal telephone exchanges all over the country with the maximum number of cases being detected in Chennai. The Government suffered a revenue loss of Rs. 5 crores from the illegal use of 484 lines of several private companies. Following information provided on the specially-created toll free number 1600-110-420, the Vigilance and Telecom Monitoring Cell of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in coordination with the local police detected 13 illegal exchanges in Chennai, four in the Gujarat circle, three each in Karnataka, Kerala and Delhi (MTNL) and one each in Mumbai (MTNL) and Andhra Pradesh. The police have so far arrested 11 persons and registered cases against them under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Indian Telegraph Act. The equipment used in the setting up of these exchanges has also been seized. The DoT is examining lapses by the operators so as to take penal action against them.
