SURATKAL, MARCH 19. The day started with miniature intelligent robots showing the National Institute of Technology, Karnataka (NITK) and their ability in sensing a series of light sources to reach particular destinations. The event had 28 teams contesting for a prize of Rs. 40,000. The hall was crowded with robot enthusiasts who spiritedly egged on the participants. The occasion was "Engineer 2005" an all-India festival of the NITK held on Friday. The programme began with "Eureka", a basic self-propelled craft-designing contest that attracted the maximum number of participants. Held at the poolside of NITK, the teams were seen innovating with various designs to make their boat travel across a specified distance. The winner was determined on the basis of the time taken to cover the distance, payload taken, and maximum deviation. The cryptography lecture on "Application of number theory and fields in cryptography" was delivered by B.R. Shankar followed by the event, "BluePrint". The various project presentation started off with electronics, chemical, computer science, mechanical, metallurgy, civil and mining students from different technical institutions throughout the country making short but interesting discourses on their areas of specialisation. These sessions were competitive and were well attended. "Free Fall", organised to generate layman's interest in science and technology, was the most innovative of all the programmes. It started with "Scavenger" hunt, a science quiz for the audience and a particularly innovative hair dryer football contest.
