CUDDALORE, MARCH 21. Tsunami-affected people in Cuddalore and Villupuram districts have expressed unhappiness with the quality of rice distributed as part of relief measures. This was one of the major complaints at a public hearing chaired by a two-member team deputed by the Supreme Court Commission for Food Security here on Saturday. The team consisted of V. Suresh, Food Adviser, Tamil Nadu, and Prof. Muralidhar of the Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai. Fishermen's representatives alleged that the discoloured rice was emitting a bad smell. They said the monthly supply of 30 kg per family, including 60 kg supplied soon after the tsunami tragedy, was unfit for consumption. Hence, many of the families were forced to sell the rice in the open market at Rs. 3 per kg for purchase of fine varieties that range between Rs. 15-18 per kg. They alleged that many children and elderly persons had developed stomach ailments after consuming cooked rice and needed medical attention.
Mahila panels
Mr. Suresh suggested formation of mahila committees in villages to monitor the quality of rice distributed.
