Six-member team for Baku event

NEW DELHI, MARCH 21. In the first international event after Athens Olympics, India is fielding a six-member team with its two key boxers moving to different weight categories.

The Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Mohammed Ali Qamar, has moved to the flyweight class while Akhil Kumar hopped into the bantamweight category. Their strengths in higher weight categories will be put to test at the Chaudhary Cup in Baku, Azerbaijan, from March 22 to 29.

"This tournament is the right time to test our boxers as we prepare for the November World championship," said coach Jaidev Bisht. "Any chance we have would be in the lower weight categories and hence we are trying out Qamar and Akhil in flyweight and bantamweight respectively," said Mr. Bisht.

The team: Balbir Singh (48kg), Mohammed Ali Qamar (51kg), Akhil Kumar (54kg), Jai Bhagwan (60kg), Som Bahadur Pun (64kg), Vijender (69kg). Coaches: Jaidev Bisht and B. I. Fernandez. — Our Sports Reporter
