World-Bank aided project for health care

CHENNAI, MARCH 21. Chief Minister Jayalalithaa today inaugurated a Rs. 597.15-crore World Bank-aided Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project (TNHSP) and its web site: www.tnhsp.org

The project, to be implemented for five years through a public-private partnership, aims at improving the effectiveness of the health care system both in the public and private domain, through increased access to and utilisation of health services.

Development of effective interventions to address key health challenges and improved management of the existing systems will be on the agenda, The World Bank will contribute Rs. 502.94 crores and the Government will pitch in with Rs. 94.21 crores.

Enhancement of infrastructure at the district level is being planned — including new facilities for operation theatres, maternity wards, out-patient and in-patient units and emergency wards. State-of-the-art equipment, blood purification machines, ventilators, x-ray machines, ultra sonograms will also be provided. Ambulances to rush pregnant women to hospitals will be provided in 385 panchayat unions.

The project aims at providing institutional care to pregnant women within half-hour of an emergency, and 24-hour maternity and neo-natal care centres will be started.

Web site opened

The Chief Minister formally inaugurated the web site of the organisation, designed by Tata Consultancy Services, and released a handbook on the project at the Secretariat.

Health Minister N. Thalavai Sundaram, Chief Secretary Lakshmi Pranesh, Health Secretary Sheela Rani Chunkath, TNHSP director Supriya Sahu, World Bank Operations Advisor in New Delhi Rachid Benmessoud and TNHSP task team leader, World Bank, Preeti Kudesia, were present.
