Held for Swedish woman murder

KODAIKANAL. MARCH 21. K. Vijay Raj (18) of Perumal Malai near here was arrested today on the charge of murdering a Swedish woman on the Kodaikanal hills.

The special squad, which camped on the hill, arrested him after an inquiry.

Britt Mari Engqvist (60), who came here on February 17 to stay in Bodhi Zendo, a Zen meditation centre, was murdered for gain by unidentified persons. The police found a partially-buried body in a farm on Perumal Malai and ordered conduct of post-mortem. A medical team exhumed the body and conducted the post-mortem yesterday. The police identified the body as that of Engqvist.

Eve-teasing leads to murder

VELLORE MARCH 21. Twentyfive-year-old Ranjit Kumar of Mudinampattu colony in K.V. Kuppam police station limits in the district was murdered, allegedly by his friends on Sunday, for teasing the sister of one of them.

Police are on the look out for Velmurugan and Munusamy.

The police said Ranjit Kumar, a painter, is reported to have teased the sister of Velmurugan of the same area a week ago. Angered at this, Velmurugan, along with Munusamy plotted to kill Ranjit Kumar. On Sunday night, all the three met at a place near the K.V. Kuppam bus stand. Velmurugan and Munusamy allegedly offered liquor to Ranjit Kumar. They questioned Ranjit Kumar for teasing Velmurugan's sister. Following a wordy duel, Velmurugan hacked him with a sickle, with the help of Munusamy. Ranjit Kumar who sustained serious bleeding injuries was admitted to the Government Vellore Medical College Hospital, where he died early today.

Dies in group clash

NAGERCOIL MARCH 21. Uneasy calm prevailed at Thoothur in Kanyakumari district for the second day following a clash between two groups, in which one person died and 20 were injured last night.

According to police sources, the clash erupted between the residents of Thoothur and Chinnathurai during a `Way of the Cross' procession taken out by Chinnathurai villagers. Julius (31) was killed when the two groups attacked each other with stones, wooden logs and other weapons. The injured were from Thoothur.

Separate processional routes were demarcated for both villages. But Chinnathurai villagers violated the police instruction. Police pickets were posted in all sensitive villages.

Vedic scholars honoured

CHENNAI MARCH 21. Honouring of Vedic scholars and book release marked the 99th `Thirunakshathram' of Srimath Thirukudanthai Andavan, ninth Mutt head of the Srirangam Andavan Ashram, celebrated on the Ashram premises at Alwarpet here today.

The day began with "Sathumarai" early in the morning. On the occasion, the present head, 11th Acharyan, Sri Ranga Ramanuja Maha Desikan, honoured 28 Vedic scholars belonging to the Vaishnavite, Saivaite and Madhva sects. They were presented with a shawl, a scroll, and a silver utensil for conducting poojas, besides cash prize of Rs. 5,000.

Three books — Paramapadha Pangam, Veera Sozhiyam and Sri Desika Sthothraani — were released by Srimath Andavan.

This was followed by `Anugraha Bashanam' (religious discourse) by Srimath Andavan.

The five-day Thirunakshatram celebrations began on Thursday last with Vedha, Grandha and Prabandha parayanam. On the final day today, Vedha Parayanam was completed, said R. Rajagopal, chairman, national committee of Srimath Andavan Ashram.

Sri Rangaramanuja Maha Desikan will camp on the Ashram premises on Lady Desikachari Road here till May 25.

82 injured in jallikattu

MADURAI MARCH 21. Eightytwo persons were injured, six of them seriously, in a jallikattu held at Keelapatti near Vikramangalam in the district today. According to police sources, jallikattu was organised as part of the Karuppasamy temple festival. The critically injured were admitted to the Government Rajaji Hospital here.

Youth held

TUTICORIN MARCH 21. A 21-year-old was arrested yesterday on charge of assaulting a policeman on duty.

Police sources said Suresh, a cyclist, assaulted the policeman attached to the traffic wing in the town while he was discharging his duty at Sivankoil junction on Sunday.

The accused was later remanded.

Assault case

TUTICORIN MARCH 21. The Central police have registered a case against a person named Jawahar for allegedly assaulting his wife here on Sunday.

Daisy Rani, Jawahar's wife, lodged a complaint saying that her husband attacked her owing to a dispute over family affairs.

The complainant was later admitted to the government hospital with injuries.

Jewels stolen

TUTICORIN MARCH 21. Unidentified persons stole jewels from a bag carried by a bus passenger at Kovilpatty on Sunday.

The police said the incident occurred while Ramalakshmi was travelling in a town bus plying between the old and new bus stands in Kovilpatty.

About 215 gm of jewels worth Rs.1 lakh was said to have been inside the bag, the police said.

The Kovilpatty West police are investigating the case.

Teachers stage dharna

NAGERCOIL MARCH 21. Members of the Tamil Nadu Primary Teachers Federation began a four-day relay dharna in front of the Collectorate on Monday to urge the Government to come up with an early solution to the demands in their multi-point charter including pay hike, promotion etc.

The district president of the federation, Chinna Madan, led the agitation.

TUTICORIN MARCH 21. The district received 7.6 mm of rain during the last 24 hours ending at 8 a.m. today.

According to Disaster Management and Mitigation Department sources, Tuticorin received 3.6 mm of rain while Tiruchendur received 4 mm.

Four trains to be cancelled

TIRUCHI MARCH 21. In view of the closure of Mayiladuthurai - Kumbakonam section for gauge conversion work from April 1, the Southern Railway has decided to cancel the operation of four passenger trains running in that section.

According to a Southern Railway press release issued here on Sunday, Train No. 811 Mayiladuthurai - Kumbakonam passenger, Train No. 812 Kumbakonam - Mayiladuthurai and Train No. 823 Mayiladuthurai - Kumbakonam passenger trains would be cancelled from April 1. Train No. 824 Kumbakonam - Mayiladuthurai passenger would be cancelled from April 2.

The existing slip coach service between Tambaram - Mayiladuthurai - Karaikkudi running by Train No. 813/861 and 862/814 will continue to be operated.

There will be no change in the pattern of train service running via Mayiladuthurai - Tiruvarur/Nagoor, Tiruthuraipoondi - Karaikkudi - Rameswaram, the release added.

`Bhoomi pooja'

ERODE MARch 21 . A `bhoomi pooja' for the construction of a regulated market at Kavindapady was performed on Sunday. To be constructed at a cost of Rs. 1.01 crores on 1.5 acres, the market will have two godowns to store the commodities of the farmers.

At another function, the former Minister, K.A. Sengottiyan, inaugurated a bridge at Salangapalayam built at cost of Rs. 55 lakhs on Sunday.

The SIDCO chairman, `Sindu' Ravichandran, the Bhavani MLA, K.C. Karupannan, and others participated.
