CHENNAI, MARCH 21. The Speaker, K. Kalimuthu, today told the Assembly that he did not participate in yesterday's conference of presiding officers of legislative bodies, as perfect cordiality existed between the legislature and the judiciary in the State. He was responding to the Congress Legislature Party leader, S.R. Balasubramoniyan, who wanted to know the stand of the Government and the House on the issue of balance of power between the two important organs. Mr. Kalimuthu said he was informed that the conference, convened by Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, would discuss issues of the relations between the legislature and the judiciary in the backdrop of recent developments. The Tamil Nadu Assembly had over the years held the judiciary in high esteem and the judiciary extended due respect to the legislature. Both played their roles within the areas assigned by the Constitution. "I did not take part in the meeting, as I came to the conclusion, after giving thought to it, that the need had not arisen to do so."
