Minister to inaugurate tourism project

By Our Staff Reporter

KASARAGOD, MARCH 25. The Minister for Tourism and Devaswoms, K.C. Venugopal, will inaugurate the project, `Bekalilekku,' a programme envisaging the development of the Bekal fort, at a function to be held on the fort premises tomorrow.

The Kasaragtod MP, P. Karunakaran, will be the guest of honour at the function to be presided over by the Udma MLA, K.V. Kunhiraman.

Visitor-friendly

In an effort to make the tourist destination more visitor-friendly, the Bekal Fort Development Corporation (BRDC) has mooted the five-point development programme.

The five schemes to be implemented as part of the project are - cleanliness drive, release of brochure, training scheme for tourist guides, introduction of bus and renovation of the fort guesthouse.

The BRDC has prepared a new brochure incorporating the history and tourist facilities of the international tourist destination.

The brochure will also help international tourist operators in bringing in more tourists to the fort. As part of the BRDC's initiative to make the fort a tourist destination for both international and domestic tourists, the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation has agreed to introduce buses on the Kasaragod-Bekal fort route. Similar buses from Bekal fort to Kanhangad will also be considered in the second phase.

Tourist guides

Tourists to the fort are in the dark about the history and other details about the fort. The BRDC will train and employ as many as six tourist guides to help the tourists have a better understanding about the fort and its history.

It has also been decided to make the fort premises a garbage-free zone. The project, "Clean Destination Programme," will be implemented in association with the Kudumbashree volunteers of Pallikkara panchayat.

The renovation of the guesthouse at the fort will also go a long way in providing better tourist amenities to the visitors. Toilet and drinking water facilities will also be provided at the fort.
