ROME: A Rwandan Hutu militia group on Thursday denounced the Hutu-orchestrated 1994 genocide in the African country and announced it was stopping its fighting in the region. The announcement by the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda, the main Hutu militia group, came at the end of four days of talks in Rome with the Sant'Egidio Community, a Catholic group that mediates in world conflicts. ``The DFLR commits to ending armed struggle,'' the group said in a statement released in Rome. ``The DFLR decides to turn their fighting into political struggle.'' The group also said it was willing to disarm, provided that their safety was guaranteed. The statement condemned the genocide and said the group was committed to fighting against ethnic hatred. ``We announce that we will not conduct offensive operations against Rwanda,'' the group said. More than 500,000 people, most of them Tutsis, were killed in massacres orchestrated in 1994 under orders from an extremist Hutu Government. The killing only stopped when Tutsi rebels took control of the country. AP
