Manipur to crack down on Meitei activists
By A Correspondent
IMPHAL,
APRIL 8.
The Manipur Government has decided to empower the police and paramilitary forces to shoot at sight activists demanding the replacement of the Bengali script with Meitei in the State.
The activists will be classified as a "terrorist gang" under Article 2(1) (L) of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment Act, 2004.
A highly-placed government source told The Hindu that the decision was taken at a high-level meeting on Thursday, which was presided over by the Chief Secretary, Jarnail Singh. Mr. Singh expressed unhappiness at the police's "inability" to contain the violence allegedly unleashed by the Meitei Erol Eyek Loinasillon Apunba Lup (MEELAL) members and the students' body, Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM). The Meiti activists allegedly torched 13 trucks yesterday as these were carrying consumer items violating their "economic blockade."
