U.S. to bring F-16s for joint exercise
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI,
APRIL 8.
The U.S. Air Force will display, for the first time in India, its frontline assets, including F-16 fighters and airborne warning and control systems (AWACS), which give deep insight into enemy territory.
"This will be the largest of the 20 joint military exercises carried out by the three services and is more graduated and complex," said a U.S. Embassy official.
The F-16s are being brought following a request by the Indian Air Force to upgrade the complement of fighters. The first-ever India-U.S. fighter exercises last year had seen the deployment of F-15-C fighters. The U.S. fighters will be matched by the IAF's frontline fighters, including Sukhoi-30, Mirage-2000, MiG-27 and the indigenously upgraded MiG-21 Bison, said a senior IAF officer. The exercises will be held at Kalaikunda in West Bengal.
