Not a demotion: Venkaiah

By Our Special Correspondent

MUMBAI, APRIL 8. The BJP leader, Venkaiah Naidu, today denied that he had objected to being made the party vice-president as he had earlier been its president.

"It is neither a demotion nor promotion but emotion and total devotion," he said at a press conference here. He gave up the president's post because the BJP was under attack from all sides after its electoral defeat and he thought that L.K. Advani, because of his stature and experience, was the best person to be the president. "But now Mr. Advani wants assistance and he thought that I should take up this responsibility in the present situation."

Mr. Naidu said the BJP had adopted a three-pronged approach to increase the strength and influence of the party: organisational, ideological and socio-political expansion. The party would launch agitation programmes from May, taking up people's issues such as farmers' problems and unemployment.
