AMELIA ISLAND, APRIL 9. Serena Williams quit her quarterfinal at the Bausch & Lomb Championships with a sprained ankle on Friday, the third time in four tournaments she has retired hurt since winning the Australian Open. Second-seeded Williams retired against Silvia Farina-Elia of Italy after winning the first set 7-5, and losing a second-set tiebreaker 9-7. Williams' sister Venus also lost, falling to top-ranked Lindsay Davenport a fourth straight time 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinal. The win sent defending champion Davenport into Saturday's semifinal, where she will meet Russia's Nadia Petrova, who beat Japan's Shinobu Asagoe 6-0, 0-6, 6-2 in her second match on Friday. In the other semifinal, Farina-Elia will face Virginie Razzano of France, who also had two matches on Friday. Since her Grand Slam victory in Melbourne in January, Serena Williams had withdrawn before the Paris Indoor quarters with a stomach illness, and retired during the Dubai semifinal with a shoulder injury. Earlier on Friday, Williams beat 1998 champion Mary Pierce 7-6(5), 6-4, hitting 53 winners and 13 aces.
Nadal loses
Russia's Igor Andreev upset third-seeded Rafael Nadal 7-5, 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the Valencia Open. Seventh-seeded Andreev and Nadal traded service breaks in the first set, and the 18-year-old Spaniard was outclassed at the baseline in the second. In another quarterfinal, Spain's Ivan Navarro Pastor defeated second-seeded Chilean Fernando Gonzalez 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-4.
