MUMBAI, APRIL 9. Brazilians Rodrigo De Almeida and Flavio Rodrigues netted a goal each to help Mumbai's Mahindra United defeat Mohun Bagan 2-0 in a National Football League match here on Saturday. The Brazilian duo, under fire for their uninspiring display in the past, found the target in the 54th and 88th minutes after a goalless first half. Almeida gave Mahindra United the lead, taking advantage of an unmarked position and firing home a diagonal pass from Flavio. Later Flavio fired home from the penalty spot to the left of Mohun Bagan's controversial custodian Subroto Paul, who charged the striker while going for a high ball to concede the penalty. The victory boosted Mahindra United's tally to 24 points from 16 matches, enabling it to move from sixth to fourth position in the NFL standings. Bagan remained seventh with 17 points from 16 matches. Overall, the encounter at the Cooperage was listless for the most part with both the teams fighting for midfield superiority. The Kolkata team muffed two chances, once in each half. In the 17th minute Tomba Singh's cross went abegging in the D. And Mahindra custodian Nandy Singh came up with a smart save off a sharp left-footed try by Mehtab Hussain towards the end of the match. The home team, for whom its defence stood out once again, could have increased the margin had Almeida's rasping drive not missed the target. PTI
