Stroll in the park for Mumbai

By Our Special Correspondent

MUMBAI, APRIL 9. Defending champion Mumbai had an easy outing against Orissa in the quarterfinals of the BCCI all-India knockout tournament at the Wankhede Stadium here on Saturday.

A strong batting performance, led by Amol Muzumdar (65, 86b, 5x4), Vineet Indulkar (62 not out, 56b, 4x4) and Sairaj Bahutule (42 not out, 27b, 2x4, 2x6), followed by an efficient bowling display paved the way for Mumbai's 158-run victory.

Mumbai's semifinal opponent will be Uttar Pradesh, which surprised Ranji Trophy runner-up Punjab by 36 runs at the Brabourne stadium.

Following its morale-boosting win over Karnataka on Friday, Orissa decided to ask Mumbai to bat first.

Debasis Mohanty and Deepak Mangaraj were accurate in their opening spells, but Muzumdar and Vineet Indulkar were up to the task and were able to dictate terms.

Then the unbeaten partnership of 86 runs in 60 balls between Indulkar and Bahutule exposed Orissa's shortcomings in the bowling department, though left-arm spinner Paresh Patel bowled a fine spell of eight overs.

The Orissa innings folded up in 33.1 overs with skipper Bahutule taking five wickets.

"We beat Karnataka and that's what we will take from this tournament for which we qualified for the first time,'' said Orissa captain Mohanty.

Yadav shines

At the Brabourne Stadium, Jyoti Yadav's all round display (88, 107b, 9x4, 1x6) and two for 54 was chiefly responsible for Uttar Pradesh's upset win over Punjab.

Jyoti Yadav carried out the repair work after opener Rohit Prakash was sent back early by Vineet Sharma.

Yadav was involved in useful partnerships with Praveen Kumar (52) and Ravikant Shukla (44). Punjab's troubles began after left-arm spinner Pravin Gupta claimed the wickets of openers Ravneet Ricky and Reetinder Singh Sodhi at 62 and 65.

Then Jyoti Yadav struck vital blows dismissing Munish Sharma and Pankaj Dharmani.

In the end Uttar Pradesh held its nerves well enough to march towards victory.

On Sunday Tamil Nadu takes on Baroda and Bengal plays Railways in the last two quarterfinal matches.
