NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday issued notice to the Centre and the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) on a public interest petition seeking the replacement of the existing system of burning bio-medical waste in incinerators with a new pollution-free technology of disposal by chemical treatment. A Bench, consisting of Justice Y.K. Sabharwal and Justice P.P. Naolekar, issued the notice on the petition filed by Common Cause, a non-governmental organisation. The petitioner contended that burning of bio-medical waste caused more air pollution as per latest studies. It said that a report prepared last year by experts had recommended the phasing out of the existing incinerators and the introduction of alternative technology available for treating such waste. It pointed out that in the United States and some other developed countries, the technology of treating such waste chemically was already in use and the residue after such treatment could be used as manure.
