Funds sanctioned

PUDUKOTTAI: The State Government has sanctioned funds to the tune of Rs. 36.68 lakhs to the district for undertaking development works following its achievement in the small savings collection during the year 2002-03.

In a press release issued here on Friday, the Collector, R. Thiagarajan, said that another Rs. 22.51 lakhs has been earmarked for launching development works in municipalities and all panchayat unions.

Power shutdown

PUDUKOTTAI: There will be no power supply in the following areas from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 19 owing to maintenance works at the Pudukottai Town II feeder: Rajagopalapuram, Charles Nagar, Periyar Nagar, New bus stand, Santhanathapuram, Kalif Nagar, Thiruvalluvar Nagar, Lakshmi Nagar and Maraimalai Nagar.

AIR special programme

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The water level in the Mettur dam stood at 53.54 feet today. The inflow was 1377 cusecs and the discharge 100 cusecs.

Forum plea

SALEM: The All India Human Rights Protection, a non-Governmental organisation, has demanded the Salem Corporation to build a wall to the open public toilet, which has been constructed near the exit point of the New Integrated Bus Terminal here.

A release from the organisation said that as the toilet was open, passengers were put to lot of embarrassment. - Staff Reporter

Personality enrichment programme

CHENNAI: The Small Industries Service Institute (SISI) and the Institute of Management Education and Training (P) Ltd will conduct a `personality enrichment program' at the SISI training centre at 28 College Road, Nungambakkam here from April 25. The fee is Rs. 990.

Assumes office

CHENNAI: V. Kalyanasundaram assumed office as Deputy-Director General of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Southern Region here on Friday.

According to a BIS release, he will look after certification activities in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. Mr. Kalyanasundaram was previously in charge of standards formulation, certification, sales and administration in the BIS service. — Special Correspondent

Fresh sanction sought

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation Quality Control (TNCSC) Staff Association has requested the management to accord fresh sanction of quality control staff in all regions and adopt storage/transit loss norms that were in vogue in TNCSC.

This resolution was passed at the state conference and general body meeting held recently. The members would wear black badges to draw the attention of authorities to its demands, including `health fund' benefits to all dependents of TNCSC employees and posting of sufficient manpower in all godowns. Workload revision opposed

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board Workers' Progressive Union is against the revision of workload proposed by the management.

In a statement, general secretary S. Rathinasabapathy said the union was not against the revision per se.

But if the management insisted on the proposals, the union along with other unions would take a joint action to oppose the move, he said. — Special Correspondent

Minister reviews works

CUDDALORE: The Vigilance and Monitoring Committee, chaired by Union Minister of State for Law K. Venkatapathi, met here on Saturday to monitor the projects being executed by the District Rural Development Agency. He said the Union Social Welfare Ministry had planned to build a home for those rendered destitute by the December 26, 2004 tsunami.

Bypoll directive

CHENNAI: Parties recognised as a State party in some other State and seeking to contest the May 14 Kancheepuram and Gummidipoondi assembly byelections, have to approach the Election Commission for allotment of symbol before April 20. Parties that were recognised as national or State parties in any State or Union Territory till six years ago can contest on symbols reserved earlier for them. The last date to approach the EC is Wednesday, said a release from the State Election department on Saturday. — Special Correspondent

Mother, children

found dead

PERAMBALUR: A 38-year old woman and her three children allegedly committed suicide in their house on Alampadi Road near here on Saturday. The police said Sakunthala, her daughters, Shamini, Saranya and Shalini consumed poison. Marital discord between Sakunthala and her husband, Chelladurai, is suspected to be the cause. — Staff Reporter

Woman snatches chain, swallows it

Nagercoil: Selvarani (24) was arrested for having snatched a gold chain from a child at a temple near Suchindrum.

She swallowed it to evade arrest. According to the police, Selvarani and her accomplice, Kumudhini (19) of Velankanni, snatched the chain. But when a policeman came towards them, she swallowed it. Selvarani was taken to a hospital, where a scan report confirmed that the chain was in her stomach.

Wires stolen

Tuticorin: The police are on the lookout for some unidentified persons, who had stolen wires from electric posts situated at different parts of Pudur here on Friday.

The police said a case was registered based on complaints from TNEB officials that 2,775 meters of aluminium wires in toto were missing. - Staff Reporter
