"It is politics of vendetta"

T. Ramakrishnan

`UPA Government using CBI for political ends'

CHENNAI: The Bharatiya Janata Party vice-president, M. Venkaiah Naidu, has accused the United Progressive Government at the Centre of practising the "politics of vindictiveness" against the National Democratic Alliance.

Referring to the UPA Government's filing an additional affidavit in the Supreme Court on the defence deals, Mr. Naidu told The Hindu on Thursday that the decision was "unprecedented." The Centre's "vindictiveness" had been triggered by the "embarrassment" it faced over the contentions of the earlier affidavit.

(The additional affidavit stated that the Government had decided to refer more cases to the Central Bureau of Investigation for a fresh inquiry. It also pointed to the Government's "commitment to taking action" against all officials and authorities, including the former Defence Minister and the NDA convener, George Fernandes, if they were found guilty).

The BJP leader, who is here to attend the party's two-day "chintan baithak" on Friday and Saturday, said the issue no longer concerned Mr. Fernanades. "Their target is the NDA." The Centre was "bending rules and using the administrative machinery, including the Central Bureau of Investigation, for political ends."

Mr. Naidu charged the Centre with attempting to change the composition of the investigating team on the Ayodhya cases to take action against the BJP president, L.K. Advani.
