IMPHAL: The Manipur University has recommended that the Manipuri script be taught in classes I to III from this academic session. Reacting to the suggestion made after a two-day seminar, in which scholars and experts took part, Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh has said all factors ought to be considered before teaching the script. A Cabinet meeting decided to entrust the issue to an expert body, which will examine whether it is feasible to switch immediately to the Manipuri script replaced by the Bengali script in the 18th century. Tribal students have made it clear that they will never learn this script and they will protest if it is imposed. Besides, there is a controversy: Is the 27-alphabet script recognised by the Government correct or whether the 36-alphabet script is the genuine one? The State Government's recognition is based on the recommendation of an expert committee. However, a junior judge in Bishnupur district ruled that the 36-alphabet script is the genuine and oldest one.
