KOLKATA: : Police opened fire in the air and lobbed tear-gas shells to disperse a violent mob, which attacked a place of worship and several houses in Cooch Behar town this afternoon. Inspector-General of Police (Law and Order) Chayan Mukherjee said that the situation had been brought under control and jawans of the Border Security Force, Central Reserve Police Force and the State armed police had been deployed in the town.
78 persons arrested
Mr. Mukherjee said prohibitory orders had been promulgated and 78 persons had been arrested in connection with the violence. Inspector-General of Police (North Bengal) and the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (Jalpaiguri Range) were camping with a posse of security forces. Mr. Mukherjee said the trouble was a sequel to a dispute over a football ground and a burial yard at the Kalabagan area in Cooch Behar. The trouble started on Saturday when a body was buried in the disputed land. On Sunday, a group of people took out a protest procession.While going to the District Magistrate to submit a memorandum, they turned violent and attacked the place of worship. UNI
