Stop effluent discharge, refinery told

Authorities to recycle effluent and halt discharge into Brahmaputra by April 2006

GUWAHATI: : The Pollution Control Board of Assam has directed the Guwahati Refinery not to discharge effluents into the Brahmaputra.

Following this, the refinery authorities have assured the Board to recycle the effluents and not to discharge the same into the Brahmaputra beyond April 2006.

The refinery has also been directed to monitor the effluent discharged into the Brahmaputra alternate day and submit reports.Now effluent analysis is carried out once in a month.

The Board chairman J.L. Dutta led a high-level team to the refinery on April 27.

Dumping

The team expressed concern over the dumping of petro-coke mixed with oily sludge in a huge tank for the past 20-25 years.

The refinery has also been asked not to discharge wastewater through surface drains.

Mr. Dutta instructed refinery officials to take immediate steps to install an effluent treatment plant and continuous online monitoring system. He also instructed them to check the health of the refinery workers and submit a report to the PCBA every month.

The Guwahati Refinery, apart from processing indigenous crude oil from the Assam oilfields, supplies petroleum products to the North-eastern States and surplus products to Siliguri in West Bengal.
