3 held for temple theft
Those arrested are Raja (19), Shankar (24) of Uthangarai and Ramesh (27) of Krishnagiri. Similarly, the Erode Town Crime Police on Saturday arrested four youths- Ravi, Vijayakumar, Babu and Hariprasad of Erode and recovered from them gold jewels weighing 14 sovereigns. Pulse polio second phase today
The Public Health department has made arrangements in coordination with other departments, Rotary Clubs and private hospitals to administer the oral vaccine to all children who have received the first dose, those who missed it and the newborns. Around 73 lakh children are expected to benefit from the second round. The State will set up 40,000 booths in Government hospitals, primary health centres, health sub-centres, noon-meal centres, schools, bus stands, tourist spots and railway stations. Over two lakh personnel will be involved, in addition to private clinics and hospitals, according to a release. Gentian violet solution will be applied to the left little finger of each child after vaccination as identification. A house-to-house verification drive will be conducted on the second and third days and houses will be marked with `p' to ensure that all children in that area have been immunised. Training for tsunami volunteers
Volunteers will be given a short training in emotional and psychological healing through story telling, drama, music, songs, puppet-making and library activities, according to Vijayalakshmi Nagaraj and Surekha Panandikar, AWIC executive members. Plea to put off training for teachers
The training is to start on May 16. S. Murthy, president, said in a release the training programme could be conducted after the summer vacation. Pointing out that the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court had stayed the conduct of such training during summer holidays, he said even last year teachers were deprived of the vacation due to general elections. The number of working days too has been increased to 240 from 200 days. Mr. Murthy said the entire teacher community was looking forward to the summer holidays. Staff Reporter
`Do away with entrance exam'
In a statement on Saturday, Dr. Ramadoss said the examination was a stumbling block to the rural students who wanted to pursue professional courses. Tamil medium students, belonging to rural areas were at a disadvantage compared to English medium students in urban areas in getting admission in good professional colleges in the State. To provide equal opportunities to all, he wanted the Government to select students on the basis of their performance in the Plus-Two examinations only. Special Correspondent
Two killed as van rams lorry
The deceased were Nagaraj (30) and Ponnuswamy (44). The injured persons were admitted to the Thanjavur Medical College Hospital. The van was coming from Coimbatore to Kumbakonam. Sengipatti police have registered a case. Staff Reporter.
Economic census
An official release issued here on Friday said the census was being conducted to ascertain the development of the district. All houses in villages and towns, small, medium and big business establishments, pavement and platform vendors and industrial institutions would be covered. Man arrested, stolen wires recovered
According to the police, the accused took away 2,135 metres of wires kept at Vallanad. The wires were also recovered. He was remanded in custody.
Three arrested for gambling
The police said Sudalaimani (48), Subramanian ( 51) and E Muthu (55) were arrested from Tiruchendur area. They were remanded in custody.
