Higher education

The article "Reconstruction of higher education in India" (May 18) wrongly attributes all the maladies of higher education to the affiliating system. Administrative work regarding affiliated colleges is handled by non-academic staff in universities. This is what leads to most of the problems. Universities should stop treating affiliated colleges as subordinate and become more democratic.
N. Sailapathi,

Chennai

Affiliated colleges have been producing sub-standard post-graduates, which is detrimental to the progress of the nation. As a matter of policy, no affiliation should be granted to private colleges to have post-graduate courses, particularly in science and technology.
G.V.P. Pavan Kumar,

Kommalapadu, A.P.
