Letters to the Editor
This refers to the report "Nikahnama has wide acceptance: Muslim board" (May 16). The AIMPLB's dismissal of the views of the All India Muslim Women's Personal Law Board without going into the merits of its objections to the model nikahnama is not fair. Its statement that the nikahnama sought to be drafted by the Women's Board will be another among the dozens of nikahnamas available in the market is unacceptable. The model nikahnama adopted by the AIMPLB is not meant to replace other nikahnamas a fact clarified by the Board itself. What then is wrong if the AIMWPLB prepares its own nikahnama as long as it is based on the Quran and the Sunnah?
Abdus Saboor Nadwi,
The AIMPLB is an umbrella organisation consisting of groups that range from the progressive to the extremely reactionary. Any argument for a revolutionary change in its affairs would lead to the balkanisation of the Board. The need of the hour is to democratise and modernise it. In all fairness to the Board, barring the issue of triple talaq, it has passed some illuminating resolutions to resolve the much-debated problems in the Muslim community.
N. Yusuff,
An authority on Muslim personal law that cannot muster the courage to state that triple talaq is not what the Quran prescribes and is therefore illegal has no right to justify its existence. Muslims should raise their voice against the monopoly of a handful of people to guide their lives.
K.M. Jan,
