Letters to the Editor
The recent rape of a Delhi University student has led to a fresh debate in intellectual circles on whether there should be more stringent punishment for the offence. It is pertinent to remember what Mahatma Gandhi said crime cannot be eliminated by punishing the criminal or deviant; its root cause should be addressed. The root cause of increasing crime against women is the overdose of vulgarity and ribald material on the media. Explicit scenes of rape and sex in movies and the small screen corrupt young minds. The solution does not lie in killing the culprits as many have suggested. It lies in providing value-based education and in regulating content being aired on TV screens and published in newspapers.
