Hard-fought victory for Kerala

Sports Reporter

TIRUCHI: After three days of one-sided action competitiveness of some order emerged in the South Zone phase of the National under-21 football championship, conducted by Tiruchi DFA, at St. Joseph's College HSS here on Thursday. Kerala, widely tipped to win by a huge margin, was made to work hard for its 3-2 victory over Pondicherry.

Undoubtedly, it was a marginally improved performance from the Union territory. Despite the fact that its frontline and defence still needs to work upon many aspects, the determination and drive to deny Karnataka a win was evident with the way its defenders manoeuvred on Thursday.

There was, in fact, nothing wrong with the way Kerala's attack shaped up. They were quick, agile and methodical. But in an unusual anxiety to score goals, they missed several opportunities. It was equally true that the Pondicherry defenders played well and hard.

After a goalless first half, Kerala picked up the tempo, slowly and steadily. Substitute Sabir Ali opened the account with a fiery left-footer, nine minutes into the second session. Javeed's excellent work from the right flank enabled Sirajudheen to slot the ball home. Soon, Balaguru pulled one back for Pondicherry when he converted a penalty, which resulted when Sabir Ali handled the ball at the goalline. Sabir was shown the red card.

Continuing with its attacking instincts, Kerala made it 3-1 with a fine header by Javeed.

All hell broke loose the next minute when Balaguru further reduced the margin by forcing one through custodian Nidhin's legs. Pondicherry could have conceded a lot more if not for goalkeeper Harry Benmy's fine work.

Friday is a rest day. Pondicherry will clash with AP on Saturday.
