NEW DELHI: On a day of swirling dust-storms and a drizzle, the spotlight remained on the pole vault pit, as Gajanan Upadhyay came up with yet another five-metre vault to post a meet record in the ONGC Federation Cup athletics championships at the Nehru Stadium here on Thursday.

The woman pole-vaulters had engaged the sparse gathering on the opening day with their record-breaking feat and on the second day of the three-day meet, the men took over.

Upadhyay, who had crossed five metres at the same venue on May 17, in the first National circuit meet, to become only the third Indian to achieve that distinction, crossed that height again this day.

Upadhyay, the 23-year-old Railwayman was all concentration, however, as he aimed for the National record of 5.10 metres held by Vijay Pal Singh since 1987, but failed even as the handful of spectators melted away.

One more exception to the rule of average performances was there on Thursday as Jora Singh of the BSF posted an impressive meet record of 7120 points to better Kulwinder Singh's 2003 mark of 7034 points.

Maha Singh takes title

Maha Singh who took the long jump title in the Patiala circuit meet, with a 7.91m, won again, with another good jump of 7.85 metres that came on his sixth and last attempt.

Wayne Peppin of Tamil Nadu, returning to competition after a long gap, came seventh with 7.24m.

Peppin is one of the seven to have jumped 7.90 or better.

Sunita Rani ran alone in front, as often she does in Indian meets, to post a time of 4:20.63 for the 1500 metres that could have been better had there been the customary sprite in her last lap. Her last lap came in around 69 secs. She was aiming for somewhere around 4:15.
