KOLKATA: A host of Grand Masters and International Masters led by the national champion Surya Sekhar Ganguly will be seen in action in the Tata Steel all-India open rapid chess tournament, which will be held here over three days starting on Friday and concluding on Sunday. Joining Ganguly will be five other GMs who have been playing regularly in the national and international circuits. The names include the country's second ranked Sandipan Chanda and Abhijit Kunte, who won the International Open meet here held last year. The remaining three GMs are Dibyendu Barua, R.B. Ramesh and Tejas Bakre. Nisha Mohta, WGM and women national titlist, will also be participating while there are 20 IMs among around 150 entries received so far, said the organisers. The tournament will be the first effort by the recently formed players' body Chess Players' Association of India in organising a national level event. The rapid format will be in Swiss league and will see nine rounds of action with each round allotted 30 minutes. Rapid chess being a rarity in the country, the tournament has evoked enough interest and the organiser, in technical support of the Alekhine Chess Club and the West Bengal Chess Association, may add an extra round if the list of participants becomes too big.
