Public function

for swamiji

BANGALORE: Sri Ganapati Sachchidananda Gnana Bodha Sabha Trust here has arranged a public function on June 9 on the occasion of the 75th "Vishwa Dharma Vijaya Yatre" of Sri Ganapati Sachchidananda Swamiji of Mysore. The swamiji is leaving for Canada, U.S. and other countries. The function has been arranged at the Ashram premises of the Trust at Girinagar in the evening.

Traffic disrupted

TUMKUR: Vehicular traffic on a stretch of the Bangalore-Pune National Highway in Tumkur was disrupted on Tuesday following commotion caused by a move by the road contractor to place "speed breakers"' at the HMT factory and R.S. Aradhya Circle points. At least 18 road accidents have occurred in less than 45 days after the stretch of the road was widened into 4-lane and opened for regular traffic. Instead of undertaking the work on service road, the contractor resorted to place speed breakers, people alleged. Several lorries were stranded on either side of the stretch of the road. — Staff Correspondent

Journalists attacked

TUMKUR: Seven mediapersons were injured when some members of the staff and others allegedly attacked them at the Government Press here on Tuesday afternoon. The attackers were allegedly led by a senior officer of the press. The journalists were invited by over 40 women employees of the press, who were staging a dharna in front of the press and protesting against their removal from service. The presspersons were attacked when they wanted to meet the Deputy Director (Printing) for his version.

Student dies on tour

Bidar: A B.Ed. student from Bidar reportedly died of sunstroke while on a study tour in Rajasthan on Monday. Her body was brought to Bidar on Tuesday. Pavitra Vishwanath Patil Bavge, 22, was part of a team which left Bidar on June 2 for to a study tour of north India. According to her family, she could not tolerate the heat in Jaipur where the mercury reached 48 degrees Celsius. She suffered from dehydration and headache and was admitted to the Durlabji hospital in Jaipur, where she died. — Staff Correspondent

Results

GULBARGA: The Nutan Vidyalaya Arts, Science, and Commerce College in the city has achieved the distinction of achieving an all time high pass percentage in the first, second and final year examinations of Arts, Science and Commerce courses conducted by the Gulbarga University.

According to the results announced by the university, the college has achieved 93.45 per cent results in B.A. final year examination, 85.33 per cent in final year B.Com, and 92.6 per cent in the final year B.Sc examinations. — Staff Correspondent

Dharna

BIJAPUR: The dharna launched by those who lost their tea stalls and shops on the premises of District Hospital in the "Clear encroachment drive" launched by the authorities, continued for the second day on Tuesday.

The protestors met the Deputy Commissioner and demanded that either they be allowed to continue their business there or alternate arrangements be made within the hospital compound.

The Deputy Commissioner reportedly rejected their demand. — Staff Correspondent

Girl dead

BIDAR: The district surgeon, Chandrakant Gudage, has clarified that Swati Umesh died of pneumonia and not Ambika Shankar.

Ambika Shankar, who was suffering from gastroenteritis, was brought dead to the hospital, he said. — Staff Correspondent

Cultural Festival held

MYSORE: Mysore Medical College (MMC) Students Association's cultural festival, "Infest 05 Renaissance" was held at J.K. Grounds in the city on Tuesday evening. SBT campaign

KANNUR: The 25 branches of the State Bank of Travancore (SBT) in Kannur and Kasaragod will observe June 9 and 10 as business promotion days. A press release from the SBT regional office here on Tuesday said that during the campaign, special counters would be opened at the branches to sanction personal segment loans on the spot on production of income proof. Loans under agriculture, industry and business also would be entertained. — Staff Reporter

Two struck

by lightning

DAVANGERE: Two persons died at Gudal Gollarahatti village in Davangere taluk when lightning struck them on Tuesday. The police said the victims, Govindappa (25) and Srinivas (28), were working in the fields even as it was raining. They were struck by lightning and died on the spot. — Staff Correspondent

Online payment

of Reliance bills

MANGALORE: Reliance Infocomm has tied-up with the State Bank of India (SBI) for online payment. As per the arrangement, a Reliance subscriber with an SBI account can pay the bill directly from his account. Reliance Infocomm has similar a tie-up with the ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank. For credit card payments, it has arrangements with MasterCard, Visa, and Diners Card. The user will require a personal identification number (PIN) to be able to access RIM bill payment facility on R World. — Staff Correspondent

for sugar unit

Udupi: Balakrishna N. Shetty, President of the Brahmavar Sugar Factory Revival Action Committee, on Tuesday said the State Government should take steps to include the ailing Brahmavar Sugar Factory in the rejuvenation package, which the Centre is preparing to revive sick sugar units in the country. The argument that the yield of sugarcane is low in the district is wrong. The commissioning of the Varahi Irrigation Project will go a long way in boosting the cultivation of sugarcane by providing irrigation facilities to farmers. — Staff Reporter

Bijapur adrift

in darkness

BIJAPUR: Godbalemala, Meenakshi Chowk, Navabag, Jodugumbaz, Jorapurpet and surrounding areas in Bijapur have remained without on the whole of Tuesday.

This was heavy rains lashed the city on Monday afternoon. Over 200 trees were uprooted and several electric poles collapsed in the city disrupting power supply and telephone service. The Hubli Electricity Supply Company (HESCOM) staff managed to restore power supply in most of the localities by Tuesday evening. — Staff Correspondent

Balaveera Reddy, Vice-Chancellor of Visvesvaraya Technological University.
