Committee report was evaluated: BMP
BANGALORE:
Reacting to the report "Why trees are uprooted," published in The Hindu on June 7, the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) reacted saying it had appointed an expert committee to determine the reasons for trees being uprooted in the city after heavy rainfall and strong winds. The recommendations of the committee, chaired by A.N. Yellappa Reddy, were reviewed on three occasions by an in-house committee of the BMP.
The BMP evaluated the committee's report in February 2005. Based on the recommendations, action was taken to set up 20 tree-parks with indigenous species, including dwarfs and wind-resistant varieties selected for planting. The BMP said it has prepared a manual of horticultural practices based on guidelines from the Indian Road Congress for planting trees along roads and on medians.
