Junior Acharya seeks bail

Staff Reporter

Speculation of arrest in the case of "tampering of Mutt accounts"

KANCHEEPURAM: The junior Sankaracharya, Sri Vijayendra Saraswathi, has moved the District Sessions Court, Chengalpattu, for anticipatory bail as he apprehended arrest in connection with the case of "tampering of Mutt accounts" being investigated by the Siva Kanchi police here.

The police arrested the Mutt accountant, `Kaladi' Viswanatha Iyer, on January 4 following a complaint from a member of the special investigation team, which probed the Sankararaman murder case that Mr. Iyer `tampered' with the account books at the instigation of Mr. Sundaresa Iyer, Kanchi Mutt Manager. According to the Mutt advocate, A. Shanmugham, the anticipatory bail for Sri Vijayendra Saraswathi was filed in the Sessions Court in the wake of speculation that the junior Acharya was likely to be arrested in connection with "tampering of Mutt accounts."

The District Sessions Judge, G.M. Akbar Ali, reserved orders for Monday on the bail applications moved on behalf of Appu alias Krishnasamy, Anilkumar, Arun, `mattu' Basker and Stalin.

Appearing for the prosecution, the State Public Prosecutor, S. Duraiswamy, and Special Public Prosecutor, M.S. Kandaswamy, opposed the prayer for bail put forth by Appu's counsel citing the release of Sri Jayendra Saraswathi by the Supreme Court and that of Sri Vijayendra Saraswathi, Sundaresa Iyer and Raghu by the Madras High Court.

The PPs said enlarging of petitioners, particularly Appu on bail, when the trial process in the Sankararaman murder case was about to begin would definitely affect the case. After hearing the arguments, the judge reserved orders on the bail applications.
