Vikrant wins

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: Vikrant Chopra's brilliance on the final day of the Eagleton amateur golf championship 2005 saw him set two new records at the course.

First Vikrant eclipsed Chiragh Kumar's three-day old record of eight-under 64 as the best single-round score carding a nine-under 63 for the final round and he also set a new cumulative for the four-day total, setting the new benchmark at an amazing 20-under 268. The previous best was in the name of Gaganjeet Bhullar who had a score of 13-under 275 in the same tournament last year.

Vikrant's first birdie came on the third hole and in the first half the Delhi-based golfer playing for ONGC, had a total of five birdies. By the seventh hole Vikrant had overtaken overnight-leader Chiragh Kumar and on the inward journey he stepped on the accelerator to keep on increasing his lead. Vikrant added another five birdies on the back nine.

Chiragh meanwhile was finding it hard to match strides with Vikrant. Some loose play by Chiragh meant that he was always trying to save pars and though he did have four birdies in his card he also had two bogeys.

Actually Chiragh did not play badly ending the day at two-under 70 but Vikrant played superbly. He was hitting and putting brilliantly and save for the bogey on the 15th did nothing wrong. Vikrant played consistently over the four rounds and with below par scores on all days (70, 66, 69, 63) went on to aggregate an amazing 20-under for the 72 holes.

The scores:

Vikrant Chopra 268 (70, 66, 69, 63); 2. Chiragh Kumar 273 (64, 67, 72, 70); 3. Raj Randhawa 280 (72, 69, 71,68) and H.S Kang 280 (71, 69, 70, 70); 5. Manav Das 282 (74, 70, 68, 70); 6. Simarjeet Singh 283 (70, 68, 72, 73).
