CHENNAI: G.V. Sai Krishna of Vijayawada defeated two joint leaders to wrest sole lead at the end of the eighth round in the 19th Indian Bank-Vels National under-9 chess championship being played here at Pallavaram in Chennai on Friday. Sai Krishna, who is trained by L.V. Sivakumar of Nellore, has 7.5 points from eight games. In the eighth round, Sai Krishna used the back rank weakness of Girish Koushik (Kar) to win a rook. He later sacrificed a rook to checkmate his opponent in 37 moves.
Clean slate
One point behind him in second place are Girish Koushik (Kar), S. Kausik (TN) and Pani Bhushan (AP) with 6.5 points. A.R. Priya of Eluru, Andhra Pradesh is moving closer to the title in the girls' section after she won both her games to maintain her winning spree. She has won all eight games and has established a 1.5-point lead with three rounds still to be played. In the second place is J. Sahari, also from Andhra Pradesh with 6.5 points. In the eighth round, Priya won two pawns and was coasting along for an easy victory. However, a temporary lack of concentration cost her a rook for bishop on the 55th move and this gave Uma Bharathi of Chennai some fighting chances to make a draw. The Chennai girl however missed her chance with a mistake on the 64th turn to lose later. In the morning session, leader Priya kept her one point lead intact by accepting an ambitious knight sacrifice from Andhra mate K. Deepika. In the boys' section, Girish (Kar) and Sai Krishna (AP) won to stay in front with 6.5 points from seven games.
