BJP MLAs from Bangalore write to Siddaramaiah on metro rail

Staff Reporter

Ask Deputy Chief Minister, his colleagues to `break their silence'

BANGALORE: Bharatiya Janata Party legislators from Bangalore have urged the Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, and his colleagues P.G.R. Sindhia, M.P. Prakash and H.D. Revanna, to "break their silence" and come out in the open in support of the metro rail project.

This comes two days after they wrote to the former Prime Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) President, H.D. Deve Gowda, criticising him for "throwing a spanner in the works" when the project is poised to take off.

The legislators have asked Mr. Siddaramaiah to share with the public the stand they took on the issue in the Cabinet meetings and confirm their support for the project. They said Mr. Siddaramaiah and the other Janata Dal (S) Ministers are sending confusing signals, by approving the decision in the Cabinet, but opposing the project at the party forum.

This is nothing short of political scheming, and a conspiracy to mislead the public, they alleged.

They pointed out that Mr. Deve Gowda has raised objections about the energy requirement for the project, and whether it would be sustainable in the long term. However, the project report has detailed estimates of the requirement and the means to make it available. "If power shortage is going to be a problem, how did Mr. Revanna, Mr. Deve Gowda's son, who is the Energy Minister, approve the project?" they asked.

They wondered whether the Rs. 6,300-crore project has been cleared without detailed discussion at the Cabinet-level, or without inputs from technical experts and merely on the basis of the proposals made by officials?

They asked Mr. Siddaramaiah as to how he allocated Rs. 51 crores in the current budget for the project, if, as Mr Deve Gowda claimed, the Metro project in Delhi and Kolkata have failed?

The legislators who have written to Mr Siddaramaiah are R. Ashok, Katta Subramanya Naidu, P.C. Mohan and Raghu (MLAs) and Aravind Limbavali and Vimala Gowda (MLC).

CPI supports metro

The Communist Party of India Bangalore District Council has said it supports the need for the metro rail project. Implementation of the project is already being delayed and metro rail will help the public overcome the traffic and transport problems.
