VTU to facilitate virtual counselling for MBA, MCA admissions

Special Correspondent

System to be extended to CET counselling next year

MYSORE: The Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) has taken a technological leap to facilitate virtual counselling for students seeking admission to MBA and MCA programmes from the academic year 2005-06.

The VTU Vice-Chancellor, K. Balaveera Reddy, told presspersons here on Tuesday that the new system will obviate the need for students to congregate at one centre for counselling.

The project will later be extended for M. Tech programmes also.

He said the system is nothing but video conferencing from five counselling centres at Belgaum, Gulbarga, Davangere, Bangalore and Mangalore and will reduce the burden on students and parents, who otherwise will have to travel long distance for admission process.

BSNL to provide network

The five centres will have facilities for computing, seating, conferencing and all the counselling centres will be connected to the VTU headquarters in Belgaum by a high bandwidth, secure network provided by the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited especially for the event.

The data related to colleges and seat availability will be made available at all the centres on real time basis.

Custom developed software will be hosted at Belgaum, which will provide information pertaining to availability of seats, Dr. Reddy said.

The software will take care of programmes, departments, quotas, ranks, etc., and will expedite the process of admission, according to Dr. Reddy. The new system will facilitate students and guardians to not only know the status of seat availability, but will also enable them to talk to the counsellors across the five centres, if necessary.

This system will bring complete transparency in seat allocation.

This project will initially be rolled out for postgraduate students pursuing Master of Business Administration, Master of Computer Application and M. Tech and the VTU will add more centres across the State in future to make counselling a local affair.

CET counselling

Mr. Reddy said the same technology will be used for counselling for Common Entrance Test for admission to professional courses in the State from the next academic year.

An expert committee has been constituted for the purpose to identify the counselling centres across the State.

Explaining the technical aspects of the new system, Dr. Reddy pointed out that it works on Multi Protocol Label Switching and Virtual Private Network and provides Quality of Support (QoS) thereby ensuring that all video and voice traffic get the necessary priority during transmission.

Using this technology, BSNL has assured the VTU that the two-way video conferencing and four-way video display can be accomplished without the usual jitters, jagged edges and frame drops.

M.S. Shivakumar, Registrar, VTU, Belgaum, and management committee members of the National Institute of Engineering were present.
