Fashion world stunned over Bidappa's detention

Staff Reporter

He is confident of being cleared soon, says wife

BANGALORE: Bangalore's fashion world has expressed shock over fashion consultant Prasad Bidappa's detention in Dubai on the grounds of being in possession of marijuana.

Mr. Prasad Bidappa was detained at the Dubai Airport on Saturday for allegedly carrying marijuana with him. He is in Dubai to sign a contract for a fashion event to be staged there.

A PTI report quoted officials at the Indian Consulate in Dubai as saying that they were aware of Mr. Prasad Bidappa's detention and that he has been provided with consular access. "The consulate has provided him with consular access. Our officials met him. We will provide assistance that is possible within the framework of the law," Indian Consul General Yash Sinha said on Tuesday.

"The case is under trial and we have recommended some lawyers for him," Mr. Sinha added.

In Bangalore, photographer and Mr. Prasad Bidappa's friend Waseem Khan said, "It is sad and I am sure it is a mistake. I don't think he was carrying it."

Designer Paresh Lamba who has known Mr. Prasad Bidappa for over 10 years echoes the feeling of shock among Bangalore's fashion fraternity. "I just arrived in town and am shocked to hear about this," he said.

"Prasad Bidappa is respected in the industry. I am really feeling sad that he is so far away without anyone for help. I hope it gets over fast."

Mr. Paresh Lamba doesn't rule out the possibility of Mr. Prasad Bidappa having been framed in the case. He recalls an incident in which sons of three Mumbai businessmen were arrested in Dubai on the charge of being in possession of marijuana and were later released as it turned out that they had been framed.

Sources in Prasad Bidappa Associates said the contents of Mr. Prasad Bidappa's suitcase were undergoing analysis and the results awaited. Mr. Prasad Bidappa's wife, Judith Bidappa, is expected to travel to Dubai shortly.

PTI reports:

Ms. Judith Bidappa has said that the issue is not whether her husband smokes marijuana but it is that he was found carrying it in a country that does not permit it. ``What is permissible in some cultures may be a crime in others," she said.
